Dr. Fauci: A Taste of Totalitarianism?
Will America learn anything from the covid experience?

Introduction
Pretty much everyone in the United States and a massive number of people around the world recognize the name Dr. Anthony Fauci. He served as director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022 and was a key figure during the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of his role during the pandemic, and the advice he offered to authoritative figures during that time, some people view Dr. Fauci as an unrivaled hero while others consider him a diabolical villain. Here we will consider why people have developed such uncompromising viewpoints where Dr. Fauci is concerned.
Those who view Dr. Fauci as a hero believe he was a man placed in the unenviable position of helping guide the nation and the world through what could be argued was one of the most challenging times in human history - the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, Dr. Fauci handed out advice to government officials concerning what steps should be taken to quell the spread of the disease and what safety precautions might help minimize fatalities.
In 2020, with the onset of the pandemic, Dr. Fauci was appointed to the White House Coronavirus Task Force along with Vice President Mike Pence, Surgeon General Jerome Adams, Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, and Dr. Deborah Birx, who served as coordinator of the team. However, during the life of the task force, Dr. Fauci served, at least to a large degree, as spokesman for the group given his expertise in infectious disease, although Dr. Birx participated in many of the briefings.
Birx's time at the Whitie House was cut short as she resigned in early 2021, her reputation having been damaged for a number of reasons including the fact that she issued recommendations for the public while she failed to follow her own advice in her private life. She also admitted later, in her book Silent Invasion, that she had not been fully candid with the administration in some of her recommendations. For instance, she recommended a two-week United States lock-down, knowing full-well the plan was for something much longer term. Two weeks was what she believed she could initially sell to the Trump administration.
Dr. Anthony Fauci
Once Dr. Birx stepped down, all eyes fell on Dr. Fauci. The United States and the world seemed to look to him for direction. He appeared before the Senate countless times answering questions about the origin of the pandemic and attempting to explain the logic/science behind his recommendations on how to deal with the pandemic. Certain Senators, and most notably Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a former ophthalmologist who serves as chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, questioned Fauci's seemingly heavy-handed response to the pandemic.
Where the origin of the pandemic was concerned, many believed it was a result of a lab leak where questionable testing and experimentation may have been taking place. Fauci balked at the notion, insisting that the virus had somehow made the leap from animals to humans in a wet market in Wuhan, China where the disease first appeared.
Perhaps the most impactful discourse between Dr. Fauci and the Senate has been his purportedly scientific recommendations about how to deal with the virus along with some decisions that were, at the very least, constitutionally problematic. For instance, two early recommendations were that people should maintain a distance of 6 feet from other individuals and wear masks to prevent the spread of the disease. According to Dr. Fauci, these recommendations were based on scientific data.
Many governors took Fauci's recommendations seriously, insisting that businesses should shut down, and group meetings (church, etc.) were ultimately prohibited. The U.S. became a madhouse. Business owners who sought to maintain a semblance of normality by keeping their doors open were treated as criminals while other business refused to serve anyone who was not wearing a mask. Schools were shut down for months on end, preventing children from maintaining a proper level of education. Additionally, those who spoke out in opposition to such tactics were threatened with the heavy hand of government.
Later, when the vaccine was introduced, employees' jobs were threatened if they refused to take the shot and, in fact, many did lose their jobs. Opposing voices were once again threatened and, indeed, some doctors who disputed the wisdom of the vaccine actually lost their licenses for their opposition. Truly the government took a rather unconstitutional demeanor, and the cost to the nation may never be recovered.
Unfortunately...
Unfortunately for Dr. Fauci, he kept a diary during the time of the pandemic. Even more unfortunate for the doctor is the fact that the diary was written on a government server, making it subject to the eyes of the public. However, it gets even worse since the diary appears to contradict much of what the doctor said publicly, including statements he made under oath before the Senate. These differences include:
It is now known that the virus was leaked from a lab in Wuhan and that Fauci was fully aware of this fact even as he fed a contrary narrative to the Senate and the public.
Not only did the virus come from the lab in Wuhan, but Dr. Fauci evidently used taxpayer dollars to support the work being done in that lab.
There was no scientific evidence to support 6-feet distancing or wearing masks. It appears that Dr. Fauci may have offered this advice to give certain government leaders the weaponry necessary to lord over the citizenry in Marxist style.
It appears from certain excerpts from the diary shutting down business, schools, and the nation in general, was to make President Trump look bad in the eyes of the citizens and to appease Trump's enemies.
Much more could be written about the diary contradictions, but that is neither the focus nor the point of this essay. Still, the contradictions between the diary and his Senate testimonies explain why, when Dr. Fauci appeared before the Senate Homeland Security Committee on July 29, 2026, he relied on the 5th Amendment 111 times to avoid answering questions. Unfortunately for the doctor, his statements before the Senate are on record, and what he wrote in his diary repudiate many statements given under oath. It is difficult to say what the Senate will do with those contradictions. Only time will tell.
What is perhaps more disappointing is the tenor of the diary. Dr. Fauci's entries seemed to be less about the pandemic and the negative impact from his "scientific" recommendations and more about his thrill over his own celebrity. Indeed, it seems his new-found celebrity went to his head. He wrote about his intimate conversations with movie stars like Julia Roberts and Barbara Streisand and gushed over the way the press seemed to fawn over him. He bragged about having dinner with the likes of Jake Tapper and the attention he received, claiming that he may even be the most recognizable person on the planet.
What Dr. Fauci did not realize is that the attention he received was not about him. Instead, that attention came as a result of two things. The first is Donald Trump. In fact, Fauci might be disappointed to learn that the press and celebrities only applauded him because he appeared to be a foe where Trump was concerned. The press and celebrities looked at Fauci through the lens of: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Consequently, the accolades he received were all about someone else - Donald Trump. Without Donald Trump, it is likely that no one would have even noticed Dr. Fauci.
The second reason he was praised, particularly by leftist politicians, celebrities, and the press, is that they were able to use his recommendations to achieve what they had always sought - a measure of totalitarianism. It was Republican governors like DeSantis (FL) and Noem (SD) who refused to bend to Fauci's recommendations and strip people of their civil rights, while it was Democrat governors like Gavin Newsome who seemed to eagerly use the heavy hand of government against the people.
Test Run
Whether intentionally or inadvertently, the government response to Covid-19 may be seen as a test run concerning what to expect from the federal and state governments in the future. It can honestly be argued that many governors crossed a constitutional line during the years of 2020 and 2021. According to the 1st Amendment, Americans have a right to voice their views and worship freely. Other than a person's loss of certain rights for crimes committed, the Constitution makes no exceptions where such rights are concerned. Yet both of those rights were violated during the pandemic.
While there may be times in an emergency when government might need to take strictly short-term emergency measures, that can never include abrogating freedom of speech - period! Indeed, there is no emergency that would excuse or justify the thwarting of free speech or the voicing of differing opinions in America. Yet, that is exactly what happened during Covid-19, and Dr. Fauci, along with his friends on the left (state governors, mainstream media, etc.) was highly involved in seeking to silence the voices of critics - even when those critics were ultimately proven right. Indeed, free speech is the one right that allows us to prevent totalitarianism. Once it is quashed, all other rights disappear.
Conclusion
It is not surprising to see the rise of Democrat Socialism, a totalitarian philosophy, on the heels of the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the unapologetic objectives of Democrat Socialists in America is their desire to do away with the U.S. Constitution. Why would anyone want to abandon the U.S. Constitution? The reason is simple. The Constitution is the protector of rights in America. In order for socialism/Marxism to accomplish its goals, those rights must first be stripped away.
In all honesty, Dr. Fauci may merely have been a patsy for those with more devious, insidious plans. Still, given the apparent narcissism that is revealed in his diary, even if he was a stooge for those on the left, he made himself readily available and seemed quite willing to play that role.
Having experienced Covid-19 and the attempts to exert unconstitutional methods of control over the populace, the question is whether or not the American public learned anything from that experience. After all, it appears that a certain percentage of the public view socialism favorably. Hopefully that number is not large enough to surrender the rights of the citizenry. Still, we have seen what could happen in America if socialism takes hold. The question is: Can we prevent it?
