All's Fair in Love and War and Politics

On March 27th, an article was posted on this website concerning the California gubernatorial race. That article can be found under “Election 2026” in the menu at the top of this page. You are encouraged to read that article as this is a follow-up based on recent events. The truth is that Democrats have been concerned about this race since it is the top two vote getters in the primary who, without respect to party affiliation, will vie for the position of governor in the November election. With eight Democrats splitting the Democrat votes, the polls show a real possibility that the two Republicans in the race could actually end up on top in the primary, knocking all Democrats out of the race.

The Democrat Party has been doing what they can to encourage some of the Democrat candidates to bow out of the race so their votes could go to more viable candidates giving them a better chance to win in the primary. On March 3, 2026, Rusty Hicks, the California Democrat Party Chair, wrote an Open Letter to the Democrat Candidates for Governor, urging each one to consider seriously their viability in the race. The letter flopped as everyone remained in the race. Enter – Eric Swalwell.

Eric Swalwell’s sexual exploits have been known in Washington for several years. Congressmen and women, in an effort to cover their own butts, deny that they knew, but they are lying. Everyone in Washington, D.C was aware. Indeed, these things were known across the entire United States and even worldwide. In fact, not long ago it was widely publicized that Eric Swalwell had an affair with a Chinese spy - an unwise decision for a congressman who sat on the House Homeland Security Committee. Consequently, anyone who did not know about this man must be a hermit living in a cabin in the Appalachians or on a deserted island in the Pacific with no internet or television access, no printed news, and no human visitors for the last fifteen years.

Despite his shenanigans and unsavory history, Eric Swalwell decided to throw his hat into the ring for California governor since Gavin Newsome, the current governor, could not run again due to term limits. In fact, he may have thought that he had a pretty good chance of winning in a highly liberal state like California. After all, he was a congressman with good Washington connections.

Unfortunately for Eric Swalwell, the Democrat field of gubernatorial candidates in California for 2026 is very crowded. Despite his questionable history, he was polling surprisingly well (compared to other Dems), but the entire Democrat Party knew that this man came with considerable baggage and that baggage would end up being the focus in the general election. Consequently, his odds of winning the governorship would be considerably diminished. Given these facts, it is likely not a coincidence that Swalwell's misdeeds were aggressively revealed to the public with reality splashed across every newspaper headline and reported on every news show and political blog imaginable over a matter of a single weekend. As a result of these revelations, Eric Swalwell pulled out of the gubernatorial race and resigned from Congress.

Understanding Democrats

It is important to understand that nothing just happens where the Democrat Party is concerned. Everything – and I do mean everything – is a political calculation. When Rusty Hicks' attempt at thinning the field did not work, the party undoubtedly deemed it necessary to begin eliminating some of their own candidates. Given his unprincipled past, Swalwell was an easy choice. So, the timing of the release of information about Swalwell’s indiscretions, supported by the sudden emergence of his many victims, was no accident. To the party, winning the governorship is far more important than a disposable congressman like Swalwell.

This is by no means a defense of Eric Swalwell. For his decisions and his treatment of women he deserves everything he has coming. What is sad is that the Democrat Party did not show concern about Swalwell’s activities, nor did they show concern about the women he exploited, until it worked to the party’s advantage as a means to weed out unwanted candidates. That is the modus operandi of the party. Now those who planned on voting for Swalwell can distribute their votes to other candidates in the primary, giving a Democrat a better chance of running in the general election. Normally Democrats would circle the wagons to protect their own. Evidently, the party’s interests come first.

Some may wonder why Swalwell's victims waited so long to surface. After all, many of the accusations concern activity from several years in the past. However, the delayed emergence of Eric Swalwell's victims is likely not the fault of the victims themselves. Knowing how the Democrat Party works, it seems more likely that these women were deliberately constrained in an attempt to mitigate the damaging impact it could have on the party weighed against the miniscule majority the Republicans enjoyed in the House of Representatives. However, given the circumstances in California, it stands to reason that the party saw an opportunity to take advantage of the situation, thus allowing these women to openly speak out concerning Swalwell and the wrongs he had committed.

There is, however, another problem facing the Democrat Party with respect to the California governor’s race. While Swalwell seemed to be leading in the primary race among Democrats, Katie Porter was running a close second. That means she could be the greatest beneficiary of Swalwell’s departure. Unfortunately for the Democrats, Porter is not an appealing candidate and happens to also carry considerable baggage. They probably do not want her running against a common sense straight-shooter like Steve Hilton, a Republican. Thus, it is unlikely that Katie Porter is the party’s choice for November.

The Democrat Party undoubtedly plans on ensuring that only two Democrats will be left standing after the June 2nd primary. This means they will need to remove other candidates, by whatever means necessary, over the next few weeks. In fact, they will probably need to eliminate at least three candidates over the next 3-4 weeks. That being the case, those candidates who choose to defy the party and remain in the race might want to prepare themselves for colossal character assassination for which the Democrat Party is so well-known. Who, then, will be the next Eric Swalwell?

Of course, there is the possibility that the Democrat Party will have no need to devour another of their own candidates. It might be that having seen what happened to Eric Swalwell, other less viable candidates may begin to jump ship, stepping back from the gubernatorial race rather than experiencing the humiliation that would undoubtedly be headed their way. Still, unless an individual has lived a pristine life, it is probably not a good time to be a candidate for governor of California if you are a Democrat.

Conclusion

To be clear, the claims offered in this article are personal speculation, but they are also reasonable conclusions. Having witnessed politics over the past several decades, certain truths have become painfully clear. The Democrat Party always protects their own (Joe Biden's dementia is a prime example) until they choose to pull that protection as a matter of political expediency. Having needlessly exposed himself to intimate scrutiny by running for governor of California, Eric Swalwell likely believed the Democrat Party would have his back. That ended up being a calamitous miscalculation.
